Efficiency through Integration: Modernizes Vestibular Diagnostics with VertiGoggles

29 Jan, 2026

In the complex field of vestibular medicine, the transition from research to clinical practice requires tools that are both scientifically precise and operationally efficient. Arne-Wulf Scholtz, MD , recently shared his experience after integrating the VertiGoggles system into his team's daily workflow, highlighting a shift toward a more unified diagnostic approach.

Arne-Wulf Scholtz, MD

Professor of ENT and Neurotology, Medical University of Innsbruck

Chair of the Neurotology and Vestibular System Section of the German Society of Audiology

Chair of the Neurotology Working Group of the Austrian Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Head of the Neurotology Functional Unit at the ENT Department of the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria

Professor Scholtz has many years of experience in the objective measurement of eye movements, ranging from classical electrode-based recordings to infrared recording techniques and modern video-based systems.

The Challenge of Hardware Fragmentation

For decades, vestibular specialists have struggled with a fragmented diagnostic landscape. The reliance on multiple disparate systems often led to inefficient workflows and increased the complexity of patient management.

"For many years, different test procedures each required their own dedicated hardware and software solutions."

The Solution: A Unified Diagnostic Platform

Since the beginning of 2025, the VertiGoggles system has been utilized across various professional societies and within the Innsbruck Vertigo Center. The scale of evaluation in the region is significant, involving a high volume of patients with complex needs.

"In Innsbruck, several hundred patients per year are evaluated for vertigo, balance disorders, and both central and peripheral vestibular diseases."

The transition to VertiGoggles allowed the team to handle everything from peripheral to central vestibular diseases using a single, streamlined interface.

"The greatest clinical advantage of VertiGoggles lies in its unified diagnostic platform. All relevant examinations-including videonystagmography in different head-body positions in space, the various video head impulse tests, additional vestibular function tests for the detection of central vestibular deficits (e.g., skew deviation), as well as a range of oculomotor test procedures-can be performed using a single set of goggles connected to one centralized software solution."

The impact on daily operation was immediate: "The previously necessary switching between different systems is completely eliminated" Professor Scholtz notes.

Precision in Practice and Science

Beyond workflow efficiency, the VertiGoggles system meets rigorous clinical standards while satisfying the precision requirements of advanced scientific research.

"In daily clinical practice, these video goggles stand out for their high measurement accuracy, low weight, and robust design. The system fully meets our high clinical requirements in terms of reliability and user friendliness."

The VertiGoggles system also proves its worth in sophisticated oculomotor procedures used to identify deficits in inhibition and executive control, as well as to better understand attentional processes.

"Also of note is the high level of precision in scientific applications, such as the recording of antisaccades to identify deficits in inhibition and executive control, as well as the measurement of gap and overlap saccades to determine baseline reaction times and to better understand attentional processes."

Looking Ahead

By bridging the gap between versatile clinical use and high-precision scientific research, VertiGoggles is helping clinical teams set a new standard in vestibular care. The transition to a unified platform represents more than just a hardware upgrade-it is a commitment to a more streamlined, precise, and patient-centered future in vertigo diagnostics.
